Different Types of Geocaches

There are several types of geocaches including some that don't even have physical containers. Here are a few of the most common types of geocaches that a player might encounter on the geocaching map:

Traditional caches are the most common geocache type. Traditional caches are listed at the posted coordinates.  All players must do is navigate to the coordinates and then search for the hidden container.

Multi-caches involve players going to two or more locations in order to find the physical geocache at the end. Multis may vary in design, but most commonly, players may record information from a physical location/waypoint in order to figure out the final coordinates to the container.

Unknown caches are also referred to as puzzle caches. Players must a puzzle on a geocache's webpage in order to figure out the final coordinates.

Virtual caches do not have a physical container at its posted coordinates. Instead, virtual caches focus more on location. The main goal of virtual caches is to bring players to interesting or worthwhile locations. To claim a find, the player must answer a question about the location and/or post a picture of themselves at that location to their online log.
